Apple tree with red wood (seedling)
Zone 4 self-sterile: An apple tree whose wood is red, and which produces pink flowers and red-fleshed apples. The timber is magnificent and prized in carpentry. As for the fruit, it will be variable as these are seedlings. In general, however, red-fleshed apples are not the best apples for fresh eating, being quite acidic and not fantastically crunchy. They are very beautiful in appearance, though, and bring a lovely rich colour and flavour when mixed with other apples in applesauce or juice.
