Now more than ever, we are becoming aware of how many species of our native wildlife are becoming endangered through human activities and loss of habitat.

Planting trees that provide food and shelter for them is one of the best things we can do to help the world around us.

These trees are an excellent early source of pollen for bees and other insects, as they all have different flowering periods that range from early May (plums) through to late June (Walnuts). (This would provide great ornamental value at the same time!)

Their fruits will become available from August, in the case of the plums and choke cherries, September in the case of elderberry, and October for the black walnut trees. This provides a truly invaluable food source for all manner of wildlife.

A windbreak hedge is simply a barrier of trees that serves to soften the effect of high winds in an area, and helps to create a microclimate that is better for growing vegetables.

Many people choose to plant only evergreens in their windbreak hedge, but this might at times become too dense of a hedge (the aim is not to completely stop the wind, but soften its effects).

Deciduous trees also have the advantage of adding more biodiversity and continually nourishing the soil in which they grow, with their falling leaves. The species above are of varying heights. All trees are fast-growing and will fill the space to form a hedge relatively quickly.
