Rouville is an excellent hardy apple that originates right here in Quebec. Scab resistant, it is a very juicy fruit and high in sugar; very popular with sweet cider makers.

The Fruit

A medium to large apple, generally from 7 to 8 centimetres in diameter, the Rouville apple has greenish yellow skin mostly covered with red blush. The flesh is a creamy white with a consistency that is both pleasantly crunchy and extremely juicy. It has a well-balanced bittersweet flavour that is equally good for fresh eating or making juices and ciders. The fruit are ready for harvest mid to late August and will keep for about 2 months.

The Tree

Rouville is a vigourous tree with an upright bearing. It is hardy to zone 3 and has no known problems with disease. It is also scab resistant. The tree provides good annual production and has a known tendency towards precicocity often bearing fruit a little earlier than most varieties.

Its origins

The Rouville apple tree was created in 1962 and introduced in 1983 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s research centre in St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. The cross was authored by  R.L. Granger and G.L. Rousselle and parents are: Red Melba, Mac, and Wolf River.
